Welcome to a new series – minigame review, where I review a minigame on a popular server. To begin, I decided to check out Hypixel’s latest offering – “UHC Champions”.
The Christmas Break has meant that this review was delayed, however I used this extra time to give the minigame more of my attention.

If you’re a fan of any of the Mindcrack group, you’ve probably heard of Ultra Hardcore. Even if you’re not a fan, you might have heard of UHC. If you haven’t, a basic rundown is as follows: Natural Health Regeneration is turned off, players team up, gear up, and battle to the death.

What often makes UHC hard is finding a server and people to play with. While communities exist, getting twenty plus people together isn’t the easiest thing to do. UHC Champions fixes this, by getting 111 players together, in teams of three, and puts them in a randomly generated world.

When I tried to play on launch day, I had a number of connection problems. I’m going to partially put that down to hype, and partially to my internet connection.

In terms of gameplay, i’m not sure about teams. If you go with two friends and have voice chat, or are in the same room, it works well. In many of the games I played however, other team members ignored me and did their own thing, resulting in being split up and destroyed by other teams. Hypixel.net aims to fix this by adding a compass that points to teammates, but this often gets ignored in the rush of gearing up.

The format works well, and the inclusion of a deathmatch after 60 minutes keeps the games short, while the shrinking worldborder keeps people close together.

You can play UHC Champions on the Hypixel Server: mc.hypixel.net. It requires Minecraft 1.8
