If you’ve ever wondered what Minecraft might look like were it written in anything other than Java, here’s your chance! Developer John Alcatraz has put together a basic infinite voxel world demo in Unreal Engine 4 that’s basically Minecraft, but with better (default) graphics and performance. As you can see from the video above, it’s not perfect, however it looks very pretty.

According to Alcatraz, the intention in creating this wasn’t to port Minecraft, but rather to find out how hard it would be to make a voxel based game that performed well in the Unreal Engine. Alcatraz explains a lot of the process behind making the demo in this forum post, if that’s something that interests you.

You can also download and try out the game — if you have trouble unzipping the folder, Alcatraz recommends using 7zip.
