Originally reported by CNBC, Microsoft is apparently near a deal to buy ‘Minecraft’ for $2B.
Microsoft Corp is in serious discussions to buy Mojang AB, the Swedish company behind the popular “Minecraft” video game, The Wall Street Journal said, citing a person with knowledge of the matter.
What Does This Mean for Minecraft?
Microsoft is the developer of the Xbox. With the purchase of Mojang, could we see PC and PlayStation development reduced and even removed, in favour of the Xbox versions?
Furthermore, Could texturepacks and skins become ‘official’, as on the console versions?
We cannot confirm either of these, they are simply speculation. What they mean however, is a world where Minecraft is no-longer a game where the community contributes a large amount to the value of the game.
A merger is not 100% confirmed however, and Notch has said in earlier interviews that:
Mojang does not exist to make as much money as possible for the owners. As the majority shareholder, I’d know. Every time a big money making deal comes up that would make a lot of money, it’s of course very tempting, but at the end of the day we choose to do what either makes the most sense for our products, or the things that seem like fun for us at Mojang.
